I went into Simple Minds site and indeed he has passed away. The site's community does not display dates and times of postings (I could not find it anywhere), I could not confirm if he passed away today or yesterday... Not much details are posted either.
Sad news isn't it...

Wow, first Robert Palmer and then Tony Thompson? Curse of The Power Station?
Very sad news. I always loved Tony's playing. Can you hear Bonzo, Porcaro, Carlos, and Tony jammin' away? Now THAT would be cool!

A great shame, what a talent.
Always loved the Bowie stuff he did.

I still can hear that one fill he had with a flam at the end that was the damn coolest fill I'd ever heard.
He wrote the book on cool funk fills, IMO.

How sad. He'll be missed. I remember reading an MD interview with him and he said he idolized Bonham and Cobham. Interesting combo.

I remember trying to work on the intro he did for "Bang A Gong"-Power Station in high school. I also remember him backing Led Zepplin at Live Aid!
Rest in Peace....................
